What will the weather be like?

Winter Mountain weather can be very fickle, and Montana is no exception. Winter weather varies tremendously by region: from east to west, temperatures can range anywhere from -15ºF to 50ºF (-26ºC to 10ºC). This allows for a range of activities, though temperatures remain in the low 20s to 40s (-6ºC to 9ºC) where we will be playing the majority of the time, with higher temperatures arriving in February and March. Average snowfall at Big Sky is reported around 400” (10 m). Actual accumulations can vary greatly depending on prevailing weather patterns, but reliable snow is always available for winter activities. Spring Spring is the wettest time of the year in Montana. May and June feature the most precipitation. Snow may fall well into spring in the mountains, and huge temperature fluctuations are to be expected. Spring also heralds the arrival of melting mountain snow, which floods local rivers and streams with an abundance of cool mountain water, especially in June. This time of the year is fantastic for whitewater rafting, but usually not conducive to fly-fishing. Average temperatures for spring range from the high 30s to high 50s (3ºC to 14ºC). Summer Summer is dry and sunny, and typically runs from July through September. Temperatures range from the mid-70s to low 90s (23ºC to 34ºC) during the day, and 40s to 60s (5ºC to 15ºC) at night. In higher altitudes, lows can drop down to the 20s and 30s (-6ºC to 2ºC). Like any mountainous region, rain, thunder and lightning storms are to be expected periodically, though they pass through quickly. The region enjoys very low humidity and snow is not typical for July and August, though September may see an occasional snowfall. Fall Autumn usually begins in late September and runs into November. Fall weather is highly unpredictable, with October featuring both cold and warm periods in varying swings. November brings colder temperatures, more precipitation, and increased cloud cover. Temperatures vary greatly; from 60s to 70s (14ºC to 25ºC) in September, 50s to 60s (10ºC to 15ºC) in October, and cooling down to the 30s to 50s (0ºC to 14ºC) in November.
